he’s a pretty pretty flower

8 May 2008 In: Internets

I’m stopped watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition, because it makes me cry and I don’t really like sitting on the couch by myself on a Sunday night crying about some show that involves Ty Pennington giving some very worthy family a brand new house fit for an episode of Cribs. But you know what I can get down with? A contest that involves a teenage boy wearing a flower costume just so he can help his family win a $20,000 home makeover with Tayna Memme. You can go vote for your favorite submissions through June 7.

I really hope a good portion of that $20,000 prize money is gonna be handed right on over to this kid, to not only buy a new bedspread, but maybe buy back some dignity for being a flower that all the internet can see.

There are ten total submissions in the contest’s semi-finalist gallery and, yes, I went through all ten before casting my vote for this kid. Granted, it was kind of hard not to vote for the little 2 year old that was reciting a poem her parents had clearly written, especially when she got to the part about having triplet babies. I think the twenty grant would have just went for a year’s worth of diapers, though, instead of to redo their home, or quite possibly pay for the 2 year old’s future therapy bills.

I need to get my butt in gear and figure out some video editing software I can use, only so I can enter contests like these!

my gift to you

If you’re ever job hunting, I’m gonna give you some tips:

  1. Get a new email address. Nobody wants to see the email address cuuutie_pie333@hotmail.com and then find out it belongs to a 42 year old man.
  2. Don’t be an asshole when you’re calling to ask about a job. Rest assured, the place you’re calling has caller ID and will let everyone know how big of a douche you were on the phone.
  3. Let’s say you’re running late. Just call and let someone know; they’ll probably be more than happy to reschedule. But if you just don’t show up? Man, you’re hosed next time you think you might want to work there.

And not so much a job tip, but a What the Hell type of thing? Between 1pm and 6pm today, I had four voicemails with places wanting to interview me. Where the hell were they two weeks ago? I’m sure they all pay better then what I’m doing now, but dammit, I’m committed now!

paintball cures the anger

7 May 2008 In: Misc.

Now that I’m working somewhere that I’m not super angsty all the time, and sending Jenni instant messages about my former boss like “WHY WON’T HIS HEAD SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODE?”, I don’t really feel as angry as I used to. That’s a ginormous relief, because I don’t really like being so angry all the time. And while I did want to hug my former boss so hard he would stop breathing, I don’t think I’d ever want to kill someone.

The only other time prior to that where I remember being so angry was when my grandma died, and you know what helped with that? Blasting a paintball gun all over my parents’ backyard. At the time, my brother had just recently bought one, and by the time my grandpa and I were done releasing some anger, my dad’s wheelbarrow was covered in yellow and white paint. What can I say? Firing off some rounds of paint balls makes a person feel so destructive, and yet so absolutely harmless…

I can’t help but think that it’d be pretty fun to put on some goggles (and other various safety equipment), get hooked up with some spyder paintball markers and chase all my homies through a field blasting them to kingdom come. With paint, of course. We made tentative plans a year or two ago to get a big group together and take over a local Paintball Shootin’ Place, but I can’t remember why it fell through. We should probably schedule it again, though, because nothing says I Love My Friends then splattering a load of paint all over them.

$41 richer and less dusting to do

7 May 2008 In: Misc.

Back when I worked part-time at Best Buy, I’d head over every Tuesday on my lunch break to the closest Best Buy store and buy all the new releases, and whatever other movies I thought I needed that week. The end result? Over 400 DVDs. Know how many of them haven’t ever been opened? Probably over 100.

I took some of them, along with some CDs I found laying around, into Half Price Books today to sell them. I wasn’t using them, and they were just taking up room. I walked out with $41, which in the grand scheme of thing, isn’t really that much. But it was pretty awesome to get rid of stuff that I’m not using and don’t need.

I’m probably gonna end up taking the rest of it somewhere, too. Clearly if I’ve had a DVD for 3+ years (that’s how long it’s been since I quit Best Buy) and I haven’t ever opened it, I really don’t have a need for it.

Even if that does mean getting rid of things like the first season of the Osbournes and a copy of the movie Murderball. I don’t even know why I bought those!

  • The vitamins I started taking are making my pee turn really bright yellow. It’s like sunshine exploded in my toilet every time I have to go. #
  • @reversecowgirl these vitamins are also expired by a couple of months, so maybe that’s it! #
  • @best_day_ever WHEW. at least I know it’s somewhat normal then. It was just like a colorful surprise! #
  • Not gonna lie, every time I drive into downtown I have my own little private Mary Tyler Moore moment. If only I had a damn tam. #

five down

6 May 2008 In: Internets, Work

First off, I started a new blog, one where I can write all about work and write all about other things without it being attached to my name. Except for the whole domain registration thing, but I don’t care. It’s all good for now. I’ll still be posting here all the time, because how could I not? But at least there’s a place where I don’t have to censor myself at all. Yay for that.

Work is awesome awesome awesome so far. It’s only been five days, but those five days have been pretty darn good. Company-wise, it’s small, very small. And I like that so much. It’s been years since I’ve worked for a small company, and while I know it’ll have its share of drama, I think it’s a much better fit for me than what I’ve been dealing with since moving up here. We had a staff meeting today, which meant free lunch. It also meant the CEO punched me in the arm three times. It’s okay, though, because she’s awesome!

Also pretty awesome? The CEO told me I interviewed well and she was really impressed by me. She also keeps telling people I’m very sharp. So, I think things are good there!

tv catchup

5 May 2008 In: TV

The thing about working? I get way behind on my TV programs and my internet reading.

Between last night and this morning, I got caught up on the following shows:

  • Supernanny: I can’t help watching that show. I want to have a kid just so Jo Frost can teach me how to raise it.
  • Top Chef: Finally an episode where I understand half the things being cooked… probably because there were kids in the kitchen this time around. My favorite already got the boot, so I’m trying to pick a new one, which is kinda hard. If I had to pick by hair, it’d totally be Richard Blaise.
  • Survivor: Can anyone else possibly be blindsided this season? I really do love this season, even if two of my favorites are sitting on the jury.
  • Lost: I started this show at the beginning and now I feel like I just can’t give up on it.
  • I Know My Kid’s a Star: I’m so glad someone decided Danny Bonaduce needed a job. Without him, this show would just be a bunch of seriously crazy moms and their kids that aren’t ever gonna be stars despite what they think.
  • 30 Rock: Jack Donaghy as part of Homeland Security? Yes, please. I don’t think Tina Fey could have possibly put together a better cast of people. Favorite scene this week? Jack’s assistant singing a Sarah McLachlan song to him as he gets on the elevator.
  • The Office: I’m so glad I got sucked into watching this show. I love the whole cast so much. Stanley was on a morning radio show earlier this week, and it made this week’s episode even funnier.

What do we learn from this? That I should probably slow down on the amount of TV I’m watching.

  • Some guy is freestyle rapping outside my window. He compared his girl with the movie Face Off. I love Minneapolis. #
  • OK, all of the Twin Cities. I know the zoo isn’t the most original idea, but did you ALL have to have it? #
