the last kiss

September 18th, 2006 | 1 Comment | Posted in Movies, Reviews

I went to go see The Last Kiss this weekend. I was craving nachos, and figured the only way to fulfill that craving was to go to the movies and have some. Here’s how I like to go see a movie – just show up at the theater and see whatever is playing next. It’s fun that way.

I was a pretty big fan of Garden State when it came out, but more because of the writing than of Zach Braff’s acting. But with The Last Kiss, I guess it was different.

Zach Braff? He’s hilarious. I kind of want to hang out with him, almost as much as I want to hang out with Justin Timberlake, but with less dancing and bringing sexy back, and more just hanging out.

A guy I work with, who also happens to be a manager now, is buddies with Eric Olsen, who plays Kenny in the movie. They went to high school together and my co-worker went to CA last winter for a week to hang out with him. We also talk about Eric’s upcoming movies and what types of roles he’s busy trying to get. It was a bit odd this morning to email my co-worker, letting him know I saw his buddy’s movie over the weekend. I left out the part in my email about seeing his bare ass and also seeing him do the deed on a white bear skin rug.

In any case, the movie was funny and cute, and it was sad and heartbreaking. My feelings towards the main characater (Zach Braff, of course) ranged from wanting to hang out with him to wanting to hit him in the head with a 2×4.

I thought it was a really good movie. The people next to me couldn’t really vouch for the quality of the movie, but I’m sure they knew how many fillings each of them had.

if they build it…

If I didn’t have plans for a Bottom Shelf Liquor Party that Friday, my work summer picnic that Saturday, and Bowling for Boobs II that Sunday, I would gladly take a weekend trip to Iowa next weekend.

As part of Netflix’s “Rolling Roadshow” tour in which 10 classic movies are being screened where they were filmed, Kevin Costner will return to Dyersville, Iowa on August 11 for a screening of Field of Dreams, which he filmed there. It will mark his first return visit to the town since he wrapped production of the movie in 1989. Netflix also announced that Costner will perform at a free concert at the baseball stadium that was the site of the movie, which will be screened after the band’s performance on a 30-foot inflatable screen in the outfield.

This will be the only time you ever hear me mention that I want to go to Iowa. Ever.

it breaks my heart

Justin Timberlake, because he’s so awesome at everything else, decided he wanted to try to make movies. His first attempt? Edison. Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, LL Cool J – there were a ton of great people starring in the movie with him.

I guess it didn’t help much, because it’s headed straight for DVD due to so many poor test screenings. The good news? It’s going to be released tomorrow and I have it as #1 in my Netflix queue.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for former boy band members, and I’m not too ashamed to admit it!

superman returns: the review!

I saw “Superman Returns” this weekend. I honestly wasn’t all that excited when the hype was going around about it. For some reason, I always think that I don’t care about superheroes and the movies made about them. With the exception to the rule being Halle Berry’s version of “Catwoman“, I’ve honestly loved every single comic book hero movie I’ve ever seen. “Superman Returns” was no different.

Because we always go see a movie when I’m in town, Rick, Brooke, and I went to see a matinee showing of it this past weekend. It was more than worth by $6.25 admission and $5 gallon jug of Mountain Dew. But I didn’t realize that until after about the first 20 minutes, which were so painfully slow they had me nodding off to sleep.

Once the movie got the information overload out of the way, so everyone could catch up to what was going on, I was wide-awake and overly jacked up about Superman flying all over the place, saving everyone’s day.

Brandon Routh did an awesome job as Superman. I’ve never seen any of the original Superman movies in their entirety, but I couldn’t imagine someone else like James Caviezel (he played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ“), who really wanted the role, or Nicholas Cage, who was originally cast in the Tim Burton version of the film that eventually went nowhere. The movie needed someone new, some fresh blood, if you will. It would have been like having the kid from “Jerry Maguire” play Harry Potter – you just don’t want to make the connection of the most amazing superhero in the world to some actor you’d seen in a previous movie.

Kevin Spacey did a phenomenal job as the creepy bad guy Lex Luthor, but when doesn’t he hit the role right on the head? I only remembered Kate Bosworth from “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton“. Keeping that in mind, I was pleased with her performance as Lois Lane. The kid that plays Jason is adorable, but I don’t expect to see him around much longer. If they go on with more sequels to “Superman Returns”, which I really hope they do, they can’t very well justify whey the kid’s growing so fast between movies. Hollywood sucks that way.

In any case, “Superman Returns” has found itself on my list of movies to buy, which seems to be getting shorter and shorter these days. Go see it. If you hate it, there’s something wrong with you. Seriously.

Let’s talk about movies I’ve seen recently, because there have been quite a few. In the past two weeks, I’ve watched the following:

Rules of Attraction – Kaye let me borrow it months ago and I just now got around to watching it. It was good! Jacked up, but good, and really, that’s what I like about movies. At first, I had a hard time accepting Dawon from “Dawson’s Creek” in his asshole role and Boone from “Lost in the role of a gay boy who wants to have sex with Dawson. It’s what I always dreamed college would be like. You know, if I ever went. Parties, drugs, sex, and hardly any focus on actually going to class. My rating? **** (4/5 stars)

TransAmerica – I bought this movie, because I didn’t want to wait for it to get to me via Netflix. I’m glad I did. It was a great movie. Felicity Huffman is my favorite on Desperate Housewives and I thought she did a phenomenal job in this particular role The kid that played Toby (Kevin Zegers) was equally as phenomenal; it’s a huge jump from his past role as the main kid on the Air Bud movies. Obviously the movie deals with things like acceptance and gender dysphoria, but it’s not as depressing as it sounds. My rating? ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ (4/5 hearts, because they’re cute.)

In the Mix – Holy Usher. I won’t lie. I asked the good folks at Netflix to send this to me as soon as it came out. While I wouldn’t pay $8.50 at a theater to see Usher in a movie, I have no problem watching him on DVD at home. And I’m glad I did. The acting? Horrible. The story? Lame. Usher? HOT. Usher is a DJ/wannabe-record-producer who turns into the bodyguard of the girl he has a huge crush on, thanks to her mob boss dad. Are you seeing the lameness yet? My rating? ♣ (1/5 clubs, get it? Because Usher was a DJ in the club? I’m awesome.)

I’ve not been watching movies like I used to watch them, mainly in part because of Tivo and the three or four hours of TV that I usually have waiting for me each evening. Don’t worry, I don’t watch every episode of Trading Spaces or Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I just like to keep recording them in case I need something to watch. Because my 200+ DVDs couldn’t possibly be enough.

Slickdeals.net is my new best friend. Where else could I have found the Rocky Anthology for $8.97? That’s right. There’s going to be a Rocky party at my house in 3-4 weeks.

I’m going to watch every single one of them in preparation for Rocky Balboa, when Rocky comes out of retirement

Oh.my.god. Even Rocky Balboa has a blog!
