Tomorrow, the Boston 3 Day starts. The Boston 3 Day was the first one I did and it’s the one that inspired me so much to keep doing this every single year.

That year, I flew out to Boston the night before The 3 Day with my friend/former co-worker Suzanne and met up with her friend Bonnie who was flying in from New York. We contemplated having beer at Logan Airport, but instead took a shuttle that we were certain was going to crash to our hotel in Nashua, New Hampshire.

The next morning we met up with Erika (and Sammy in utero!) and Erika’s way awesome mom, Marie, to start walking 60 miles. There were blisters, thunderstorms, a complete camp relocation, tents blowing away, tornado sirens, sunburn, and, of course, a snake or two on the trail we were walking.

Between Erika’s Boston accent, Marie’s Long Island accent and Bonnie’s New York accent, I’m pretty sure I developed some sort of hybrid strain of accent that I can’t ever duplicate.

Everyone said it was emotional and I didn’t really get it until I’d walked 60 miles. SIXTY FREAKIN’ MILES. And I cried. Quite a bit.

It made me realize that I had to keep doing this same walk in some capacity until it’s not even necessary. That was in 2005.

It’s 2010 now and I haven’t missed a year of participating in this fantastic event. While I would love for you all to physically participate in The 3 Day in some capacity, I know it really isn’t feasible. And that’s why I’m asking for your donation. $5. $50. $500. I will greatly appreciate it.

http://www.the3day.org/goto/wendyberry

The Sweep Team has already won an ice cream social, which we’re incredibly excited about, and right now, we’re in the lead to receive a catered in dinner at camp. This doesn’t sound like much, but if you’ve ever been a part of this event, you’ll understand just how big of a deal that is.

I’m co-captaining the Sweep Team this year with Jenni. Cindi will be assisting Jenni as the Stationary Road Coach and Regina (all the way from New Jersey) will be in my van as we cruise the mean streets of the Twin Cities looking for distressed 3 Day walkers. Jumi is heading up the team responsible for transporting people on buses to lunch and to camp every day. With some of the greatest friends of mine in the world participating this year, it’s sure to be the best 3 Day yet.

‘Round about Friday morning, The General and I decided to challenge ourselves to a weekend without cable or internet. This could be a long story, but I’m just going to tell you it was not easy at all. The idea of not having to pay ridiculous fees to watch TV and send some damn emails from home is super appealing, but then we decided we rely on the internet WAY too much and that just wasn’t happening.

We kept ourselves busy, though!

Friday, we grabbed a quick dinner at the Industrial and then went to the Twins game with Desi and Becky for Lavender’s Out in the Stands thing. The General and I spent the last few innings just wondering around the field, because I’ve only really been there in my work suite before. We stared over the bullpen way too long and I’m pretty sure we freaked Jon Rauch out. Whoever was sitting next to him just refused to wave back at me and that makes me a little sad, unknown Twins relief pitcher! Twins won, making my Target field record 2-1.

Saturday, we slept WAY in and it was awesome. Then we went to the Lynx game, sitting two rows from the court, thanks to Suzi and Pat, and saw a great game. The Lynx lost by two and played a full game for once.

Yesterday was an adoption event for Blanche, where only 3 people came to see her. If someone doesn’t adopt her soon, we’ll likely cry. And then we went to Sonic, because we’re obsessed with slushies.

And that’s my wild and crazy and internet-less weekend. As luck would have it, our cable model is no longer working. Oh, the irony.

My plan when The Hooker (aka my former car, also effectively known as my Escape) got time to trade in or I hit sudden windfall of cash, I’d give my car to some type of donate car charity. It wasn’t worth much, but I was sure someone with any type of car knowledge could really get it back up and running, much like my dad has completely taken it apart and replaced things like the quarter panel because it had too much rust. I’ve read a ton about car donations and there are billboards all over the metro here. I didn’t really understand how it would benefit a rusted out 2001 SUV with something gone awry in the engine, but it turns out donating cars isn’t as unusual as I’d thought.

The Vietnam Veterans of America are one of the organizations that will pick up your car for you, regardless of whether or not it’s running. They have a turnaround time of 48 hours! I’m a fan of that kind of efficiency! While it’s probably not ideal for the type of person that trades their car in every few years, I can definitely see how it’d be a good option for people looking to get rid of a beater or something they don’t really have any idea how to fix.

Also? Four words make this a little more appealing to me: donate car tax deduction. You can’t go wrong with that.

This started to be a Twitter, but it got way past the 140 character mark.

This morning, my phone started saying “Insert SIM Card” at the top and giving me an SOS symbol indicating I couldn’t take/make calls or send/receive text messages. Huh. Guess it’s a good thing I have Sudoku on my phone, since that’s the only thing it’s good for right now.

I tend to use T-Mobile’s online support, because I can do it during work and I can also reboot my phone when they need me to, whereas I can’t do that when I call them on my phone. Assuming it’s working, right?

We bought Blackberry Flips about a year ago, when they first came out. At first, we loved them. A lot. But it didn’t take too long before they started to take a turn for the worst. The General’s display probably takes 30 seconds after you open the phone to actually light up. Someone in a T-Mobile store tried telling us that that’s how all the Blackberry Flips were. Except mine doesn’t do that at all.

Then, the same person told us that they stopped making Blackberry Flips because they turned into basically piles of crap. Yeah, great. Thanks for that. Guess who still has another year left before they qualify for a full discount on a new phone, even though T-Mobile admits to selling a crap phone? That’d be The General.

Seems that when we upgraded to our Blackberries, they forgot to mark something in my file, making me eligible for the full discount. So while I can get a full discount (due to their error), they just expect The General to use a Sudoku machine as a phone for the next year before getting the full discount. It doesn’t make any sense at all to me and it irritates the bejeezus out of me.

So tonight will be a trip to a T-Mobile store so I can get a new SIM card and The General can see what kind of phone she wants to upgrade to. It was going to be a birthday surprise, but it needed to involve some discussion so no more surprise for that one!

KDWB’s annual ladies-only Booty Cruise got a little catty this year on the St. Croix River. Police were called to the boat in Stillwater Thursday night after a fight broke out between a bunch of the booty-shaking women in attendance… Five women were cited for disorderly conduct, but no one was arrested. Witnesses said some ladies had cuts and bruises, but nothing more serious. (via City Pages)

First off, hey, it’s called a Booty Cruise. If five disorderly conducts are all that come from that type of thing, color me impressed. I have an inkling of an idea that there may have been some other various diseases passed along, but that’s just me being judgmental after looking at the pictures. Be warned. I’m not looking at them, but my boss did — they’re not so much work appropriate unless your work gives a thumbs up to pictures involving womens legs thrown up in the air with a oiled up man wearing a cowboy hat rubbing his junk all over her.

Second off, what, if anything at all, is attractive or enticing about being stuck on a boat in the middle of a river with a bunch of screaming women that have all won tickets to a boat full of strippers by calling into a radio station?

This is my favorite quote from one article:

A representative of the boat’s operating company said the fight was “something about a shoe” but had no other details. (via PiPress)

Now, of course that study’s validity is going to be questioned by critics all over the board, especially since the research was funded by gay and lesbian advocacy groups. That makes sense. And of course, the author of the study maintains that her study was a “straightforward statistical analysis”. The president of a group called Concerned Women for America (which thinks everything should follow the Bible word for word*) is all up in arms, but this is the same organization that supports people getting fired for their sexual orientation and consider stem-cell research to be deadly and thought of as destroying human life. Um, you know, instead of helping to save lives.

The kids with two moms rated higher in social, academic and total competence. They also showed lower rates in social, rule-breaking, aggressive problem behavior. Whether it’s the two moms playing the biggest contributing factor or the starting a family without a penis requires quite a bit more planning, I think it should be enough to show people that homos can raise kids just as well as your Ward and June Cleaver type family, too.

I mean, look at the Beav. That kid was an idiot, always getting into trouble and falling for Eddie Haskell’s tricks. If June would have been married to Lucille McGillicuddy-Ricardo, just think of how well adjusted Beaver and Wally and Little Ricky all would have turned out to be. Instead, Wally turns into a womanizer, Theodore lives his life with the nickname of Beaver (no lesbian couple would have EVER allowed that!) and Little Ricky would have been, well, actually heard of instead of just an afterthought.

*You know, “Don’t let cattle graze with other kinds of cattle. Don’t have a variety of crops on the same field. Don’t wear clothes made of more than one fabric” (Leviticus 19:19) or “If a man cheats on his wife, or vice versa, both the man and the woman must die” (Leviticus 20:10) or “Kill anyone with a different religion” (Deuteronomy 17:2-7)
