online backups are my friend

July 19th, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Internets

When I got my iPod Touch earlier this year, I didn’t really think I’d use it that much. I knew I’d use it for a while, but then figured it’d get chucked to the side just like my Pogoball and Kirk Cameron poster from K-Mart. Maybe I’d use it every once in a while on a special occasion much like the Casio keyboard I used to have. Point is — I’m using it a lot and for a lot of things that kind of surprise me!

I use Google docs quite a bit on the iPod when I need to access nerdy things like fundraising totals and how many of my freelance invoices are still pending. And that’s super handy. I use iDrive for another online backup tool and it’s saved my butt a few times when I’ve needed something else. It doesn’t matter what, because that’s personal. The point on this one is that it’s helped me be able to easily access specific files anytime I have internet. And really, with the way Minneapolis is going, that’s pretty much anywhere at all.

I feel like accessing something online like that is a whole lot easier and safer than carrying around a jump drive and having to always find somewhere to plug it in just to update the information you have stored in it… which I found this weekend to be super annoying.

where’s george and a lady of the street

June 29th, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Internets

My boss and I just tracked a dollar on wheresgeorge.com. Apparently we’re both in “hey, let’s just fuck with people because we’re dicks” mode, because we said this on our submittal:

Let’s just say this. I’m a lady of the street and have done some fantastic things with this dollar. It’s had some exciting times.

Crazy thing? This bill has travelled 4.4 Miles in 1 Yr, 281 Days, 11 Hrs, 49 Mins at an average of 0.01 Miles per day.  It is now 4.4 Miles from its starting location. It was originally logged on September 21, 2008 in St. Paul!

In any case, I can’t wait until the dude logs in and sees that his dollar has been logged by a lady of the street. I would feel sorry for him, but I googled his username and found out he’s one of the creepy dudes that favorites everyone’s butt pictures on Flickr. So he kinda deserves to have inaccurate data on his Where’s George dollars. AM I RIGHT OR WHAT?

I was considering buying Lynx tickets to this Sunday’s game, because, well, I like basketball and I clearly don’t have enough things going on this weekend. They currently have a “Dads & Daughters” special, where you can pay $40 and get two $30 tickets. Never mind that I’m not a dad, nor do I have a daughter, but are they really going to check IDs for that? The General and I could pass for dad and daughter, if it came right down to it, right?

In any case, DEAR WEB INTERN: PAY ATTENTION WHEN YOU MAKE GRAPHICS AND DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. Because that tends to happen a lot on the Lynx’s website.

The excitement had definitely been building for weeks for the camping season opener this weekend. Imagine the disappointment you’d feel if you pulled up to the parking lot and realized you were going to have to lug all of your camping necessities (like hard liquor, an economy sized box of Oatmeal Creme Pies, and the largest container of Sunny-D known to man) 750 feet to your campsite. It’s a guaranteed disappointment.

Of course you didn’t pack any type of moving supplies. Why would you? It’s not like you had a need for moving blankets or moving dollies in the past, right? Next time you’ll know to read on the website to find out that you’ll be lugging those two coolers and absolutely necessary bottle of Boone’s Farm up a hill and through the woods. And you’ll plan ahead. Like smart people do. And don’t think your dog will help. He was too lazy to carry his own backpack.

dustin’ it off

Man. if I could win some kind of award for being a giant tool that never updates her website, I’d frame that bad boy.

We came home from camping a night early. It was hot. An air mattress is only good for me for about a couple of nights. And I had known there was an Law & Order: SVU marathon on all weekend, I totally would have called off camping all together.

I’m gonna give blogging every day in June a try and see how many days I can make it… before forgetting. Or being super busy. Or wanting to do something a little more exciting than typing away into WordPress.

This really happened. In a Scrabble game I was playing on Facebook. I laughed a lot. The other person did not.

Yeah, that’s all I got for right now.

this is the most exciting that happened to me today

Probably this week, even!

It’s my first ever blog-related interview, thanks to Dez. I’m not gonna lie. It was super fun and now I want everyone to interview me. Seriously. I don’t even charge for the interview and will even send you an autograph if you want. See? Not all the people you manage to link up with on Twitter are complete douchers!

We’re starting to plan summer trips already. I could go for one right now, but with both of us working, both of our jobs being insanely busy right now, and The Kid still being in school, we’ve decided to hold off on anything that requires more than a two hour drive until school’s out. Looks like camping’ll have to do for a few more weeks!

PetAmberAlert.com Works!

I get those Twitters forwarded over and Facebook messages posted all the day long about about Amber Alerts involving a billion different kids all being kidnapped by the same Buick Skylark, and for the most part, they’re all spam. Don’t get me wrong, because I seriously think the Amber Alert thing is fantastic and anytime I see the information flashing on an overhead sign, I’m all about tracking that person down. For real!

You know what they have now? Lost Pet Amber Alert. I rolled my eyes at first, but after reading the details at PetAmberAlert.com, I’m kind of impressed! While Riley and Kentucky are both mircochipped and have never been left unsupervised outside in their whole life kind of eliminating the need for us to invest in it, I can see how other outside dogs might become a very sad Lost Dog and need something like this to get them home!

insurance options

February 22nd, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Internets

We got notification at work a few days ago about dental insurance. I’m not sure why I’ve been putting off getting it for so long, but I’m gonna suck it up and add that onto the money that gets taken out of my paycheck every week. At least I can get my teeth cleaned for free, right?

Honestly, my health insurance is kind of a really bad thing. It’s not expensive on a monthly basis, but when it costs me $50 to see a therapist or a $30 co-pay just to see my regular doc, it gets a little overwhelming and expensive. NetQuote has some options that I thought about looking into to replace my insurance, because here’s the thing — if/when we have a kid, there’s no way I’m going to be able to afford to have Junior on my current health insurance plan with the rates, etc. we have. They have a ton of options that aren’t terrible, too. Aside from health options, they also have car, home, life and business insurance. And you can be pretty sure that I’m checking into for a new car insurance rate since mine went up $40/month based on now owning the new car. Yuck.
