another 101 things update!

9.   See a movie in 3D. (DONE!)
We watched a movie in 4D while in Chicago. It was way intense and therefore way better than something in 3D. Especially since we got sprayed with water multiple times.
15.  Make a list of 12 local restaurants I want to visit and make plans to try each of them. (3/12)

  • Sample Room: Dinner there last night with Maia. We had Warm Camembert, Tuna Carpaccio, Roasted Fresh Veggie Torte, Wild Mushroom Ragout on Polenta. I’m recovering from a sinus infection, so I can only imagine how awesome it would have tasted had I been able to completely taste everything.
  • Caribe: Brunch with Jenni, Matt and Amelia before Flugtag a long time ago and it was fantastic. Super cute little place that I’d totally go to again.

18.  Ride my bike to and from work. (DONE!)
SO EASY IT WAS PAINFUL. I’m going to try to keep it up as long as I can throughout the year, but it’s starting to get a bit chilly.

40.  Volunteer for three new organizations. (2/3)
I’m volunteering for the American Diabetes Association Expo next month and will hopefully be attending orientation at the Midwest Women’s Health Center later this month for something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m also kicking up my participation with Pet Project Rescue and becoming the new Volunteer Coordinator. Ooooh, a title!

see, i really have been busy

I still have postcards from Chicago I’m determined to still mail. There are still hundreds of photos from our trip that need to be uploaded and edited. And I still owe a brief write up of The 3 day to nobody else but myself. All of these things have been put on the back burner with The Kid’s school starting back up, putting in some volunteer time with Pet Project Rescue, and catching up on Mount Dirty Laundry.

And then there are our latest in the department of foster puppies. Best guess is they’re part husky/shepard/heeler/who knows what else. First, we had eight week old brother and sister, Metro and Wolfie:

Metro’s new home includes someone that works from home on a daily basis, so he’ll get a ton of attention.

Wolfie’s new dad was possibly the sweetest, most excited emo kid I’ve ever met in my life. He’s changing her name to Mila and was totally smitten with her.

And now, currently awaiting their forever homes, two more puppies from the same litter: Oliver and Newton. If I knew they wouldn’t grow into giants, I’d strongly consider snatching one of these two little guys up.

Oliver is a shy little guy, but he’s very smart. Already three times tonight, he’s managed to steal one of The General’s balls of yarn and run underneath the TV stand to play with it, because he knows we can’t reach him under there. I threatened to give him another bath if he did it again, and since then, he’s been keeping his nose clean.

And this is Newton, by far my favorite of the puppies. He’s almost twice the size of Oliver, but as sweet as can be. I think he’s my favorite, because he can appreciate a good Law & Order:SVU marathon just about as much as I can.  Not the brightest out of the litter, but, hey, we can’t all be cute and smart, can we?

As soon as these last two guys find somewhere to live permanently, I’ll try to get back to my regularly programmed blogging schedule. Or maybe I’ll just find another excuse to avoid it, which seems to be the norm lately.

(As usual, all photos borrowed from Pet Project Rescue. These puppies move way too fast for my camera!)

might be normal elsewhere

This is a perfectly normally conversation at our house.

I heard really weird noises from the living room. Knowing that The Kid is the only one in there, I yell from the bedroom, “What are you doing?”

He answers: “Trying to make a duck noise.”

Me: “Okay.”

Because how else would you answer that, you know?

full of labor

Right now, I’m laying on the couch with Riley at my feet and Jaws, our 5 lb foster chihuahua, laying on top me. After the last two weekends which included The 3 Day and several days in Chicago with family, I’ve felt lucky to not fall asleep on the couch by 9pm.

Tomorrow, aside from taking Jaws to her new forever home, my plan is to find myself back on the couch watching the 4.5 hours of “Who’s the Boss?” that I’m recording right now. I’m not even embarassed about it because it’s the episodes where Tony and Angela finally get together.

wd-40 and some hose

The Kid and I (after he woke up at 1pm and I got rid of my monster migraine) decided to do some light bike maintenance today. Now that it’s not 500 degrees outside, we could both use a little outside time. The bike maintenance included me holding the bikes while he aired up the towers and sprayed WD-40 on everything that moved. Including himself, I’m pretty sure. He seems to be pretty handy with the WD-40, much like Can Hand:

Yes, I googled WD-40 videos. Only because I know The Kid and after 2.5 years, I’m starting to know how his mind works. When you tell him he’s good at something, he likes to make sure he’s great at it. I don’t need him going door to door asking the neighbors we’ve never met if they need anything greased up with the tiny travel sized can of WD-40 we have.

We also tried using it to spray on the house, since the sprayer thing has been on there since we moved in 1.5 years ago. Neither one of us could make it move, despite our multiple announcements of “right tighty, lefty loosey”. There weren’t any WD-40 videos showing that as an option, but I also don’t know that even the powers of that magical liquid in a can would be able to pry about what’s likely two winters worth of rust. In the meantime, the sprayer that’s on it is broken into a good 42 pieces, which means there was some creative hose-handling skills involved when we were trying to wash off his bike that’s been in the garage ever since we moved in.

You know what happens when you leave a kid’s dirt bike in a garage for that long? You have spider webs that you have to cut in half with gardening shears. That may have been along the lines of overkill, but like I said, I know this kid. He’s not going to get anywhere near a spider.
