a nerdy tattoo story

When I was in 2nd grade, my maternal grandpa died. I remember a lot of things about him. He lived next door to me and he was a truck driver for Clearfield Cheese, which is now (or maybe always has been) owned by Schreiber Foods. We used to fish all the time and I’m sure he let me drive his fishing boat when I was still in diapers. He spanked me once, but it was because I kicked him in the shin at a car dealership. I’m pretty sure I was still mad at him, because he’d put boobs on my snowman I was building that morning. He used to put on a mask and scare the crap out of kids that would come to his door at Halloween. He was also a very incredible man.

Another thing I remembered about him were the scars he had on both of his biceps. I knew they were from tattoos, but that was all I knew. Then, about a week ago, I decided I needed to know more, especially with my recent obsession with tattoos. Plus, how awesome would it be if I had the same tattoo as my grandpa had? Very awesome.
What has now turned into a legend in my mind goes a little something like this. My gramps was in the Navy and got these two tattoos, one on the left arm and one on the right. Immediately following his great idea of tattoos, he gets a horrible infection, either from an allergy to the dye or to an dirty needle. He has to get the tattoos removed post haste, and nobody has ever seen them.
My mom and dad didn’t know what these tattoos were. My paternal grandparents didn’t know, despite my paternal grandpa (Grandpa Chuck) being BFF with him. My aunt and uncle (The Cuz’s parents) didn’t know. And really, I was starting to get worried, due to the lack of alive resources, ya know?

But then my uncle, my grandpa’s son, solved the mystery! It turns out he has an American Eagle on on arm and the Navy Anchor (which was probably something like this) on the other. That’s right – my grandpa was hardcore, yo.

I also found out he was a pretty awesome boxer back in his Navy days. Why I didn’t know this before, I’ll never know, but I was unbelievably excited about it when I found out yesterday. I guess it’s amazing what you don’t know about your grandparents in their 18-22 year old days.
So, as soon as I figure out the tattoo I want to get in honor of my Gramma, this old man’s gonna be rolling over in his grave when I get another one. And another one. And another one. Although, he’d probably be jealous that I didn’t have to get mine removed!

i started writing this on sunday

I’ve been busy! But here’s a recap, mainly so I don’t forget.

Friday: Most importantly, and thanks to Rick (and Brooke), I hit my fundraising minimum of $2200! Because of that, Jenni and I are all registered, sharing a tent, ready to walk our butts off. I, however, still need $2740 if I’m gonna be shaving my head. I actually think I can hit that, too!

LYNX GAME (photos, of course!). I love these so much, and this was no exception. I actually have to thank Erica for the tickets to the game, since it was her voucher for 4 free tickets we (Desi, Stephanie, Suzi, and I) used. Seattle was pretty touch, especially because Sue Bird is absolutely incredible. Seimone Augustus finally got into the scoring column in the 2nd half and ended up winning the game with mid-range jumper with just a few seconds to go in the game. It was an incredibly physical game and it just made me love the Lynx even more. I can’t wait until the next home game. (July 3 for anyone that’s interested!)

Here’s now I know I love the Lynx almost more than might be healthy – I felt like puking after the game. I walked around downtown a while before meeting up with Cindi, Jenni, and Matt on the sidewalk at Rock Bottom Brewery. I was loud and obnoxious because I was still full of adrenaline from the Lynx game. Matt escorted us all down to the Homosexual 90s and dropped us off to get our drink, dance, and gay on for the night. Since it was Pride weekend, the place was packed. And here are the highlights:

  • The bartender upstairs that I love(d) so much was very non-friendly and made me very furious. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, JUST SMILE. Or quit your damn job, if you hate it so much. Cranky ass.
  • I had a Sharpie tattoo on my elbow of a spider web.
  • Cindi was my wingman, but ended finding people she knew from her hometown and almost got me into a fight. It was not her best showing!
  • We drank $2 drinks called 007. Only because they were $2.
  • My pick up lines for the night? “I like your hair.” and “I like your sweatshirt.”
  • We had chicken and waffles after bar close.
  • I spent the night on Cindi’s couch.

a very large to do list

You all know I consider myself a pretty big sports fan, and I always have been. I’m not entirely sure where I got this love of all things athletic, because sports fans in my family (including my massive haul of 2nd cousins) are few and far between.

ESPN posted 101 things all sports fans must experience before they die today. I’m way behind on the list.

#35 (MLB Opening Day), #88 (Monday Night Football), #90 (Show Me State Games), #91 (Little League Game), and #100 (a Harlem Globetrotters game) are the only ones I can say I’ve accomplished.

I’m hoping #22 (Cubs game in the Wrigley bleachers) will take care of itself in August, when Jenni, Matt, and I head to Chicago for a Cubs game.

Man, I have a lot of sports stuff to do now…
