I would just take a pair of dog nail scissors and cut it off -- I wouldn't take him to the vet, unless it were bleeding or something. Pixie also broke one of her nails once (pretty far down but it was a clean break, so I didn't have to cut the rest of it off myself) but she seemed to get over it pretty quickly anyway.
